Climate crisis or economy crisis

Nowadays, as environmental issues worsen, climate change preference will no doubt grow more pronounced. Indeed, there is now convincing evidence that student groups have a campaign named school strike for climate. The spirit of Greta Thunberg and Licypriya Kangujam have gained international recognition to inspire every nation youngster, in which they encourage the youth to step up and criticize the world leaders for their policy failure to take sufficient action to address the climate crisis. Furthermore, the engagement of student communities also commit to adopt green lifestyle in order to reduce carbon foodprint.

Climate change is a topic which inevitably engages international perpective. This is due to the earth climate is unable to assimilate the nation border. For example, China has considerably managed to be the world number one in technology industry. The industries produce tonnes of carbondioxide (CO2) which be spreaded to every corner of the world by the wind. Then it covers the sky and traps the heat. There will be some ocean hotspots to have low pressure and initiate the storm. In Asia, storm or trophical cyclone refers to tayphoon. As we know in the recently years, the tayphoon had hit the eastern Asia such as Japan, China, and Philiphine. Additionally, pollution triggers ice melting in poles and glaciers then rises the sea level. A study by Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change Assessment Report 5 (IPCC AR5) shows that the sea level rise in Jakarta, Indonesia is about 7 mm per years or it will be around 70 cm in a hundred year. Nevertheless, the local problems such as flood and land degraded aren’t yet appended which surely complicate the crisis.

So far the United Nation as an assembly for the representative world leaders has failed to spark an agreement to reduce the carbon foodprint. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol – Carbon Trading announced that a nation who produce the carbon roughly has to pay its excess to the one who success in decline the carbon production. The statement was very clear to be understood but none was executed as its planned. This was largely because of the economical reason of each member. Mainly, the rich countries always bring out million of modern technologies needed by the poor. The poor, Indonesia was able to manage in decreasing its carbon by planting mangroves. But it acquainted the modern tools from the Japan. So basically, this policy was made to enrich the corporate.

Climate crisis is considerably caused by mass production of carbon dioxide. The concentrate amount of this gas lastly was around 420 ppm measured in Maona Loa. Regarding to the carbon projection by IPCC AR5, it will reach at approximately 950 ppm in 2100 as for the worst scenario. As the historical data has been recorded, the graph of carbon concentration has been climbing since the earlier 1800s in which the Industrial Revolution had just been started. Due to that event, most of the economic systems of this world base on the private ownership and their operation for profit. The diverse range of industry grew rapidly and capitalize each sector of life. Therefore the fostering of industry has the responsibility in increasing the carbon.

Indonesia was the world largest palm exporter by 47.4 million tonnes in 2018, followed by Malaysia 19.5 million ton. 85% of the world demand on palm oil was supplied by these both countries. But in the end of 2019, the European Union has agreed to abandon palm oil as the main ingredient in biodiesel production. They claimed that palm is certainly unstainable and unappropriate with the EU’s green energy. Secondly, the production of palm oil inclines to lead a deforestation. These cited evidences provide a sufficient reason for the EU to stop importing this tropical product as they commit to reduce the emission by 40% in 2030. The EU policy messed the palm industry and threatened the economy of Indonesia. Moreover, Indonesia was appealed by the Paris Agreement to has a responsibility in addressing deforestation. Such a dilemma for Indonesia knowing that the nation needed an economical cycle to feed the people by producing palm oil. Whereas the rich countries has just stopped to fulfill their greedy in palm industry and turn back against it by claiming themself as climate activism in so sudden. In this case, Indonesia was the victim.

Capitalism has a controversial issue for the climate activism to pull out of the closet. The lowest expendicture for the greatest need has no prudence in the environment. A friend of mine has been working for 3 years in the environmental consultant. He said that every legal final decision in the court can be changed behind the desk. The law postulates a mining corporate has to waste in the nearly river. But if the river is 50 km away, it will definitely loose the profit. This case can be easily solved by persuading the local decision maker. Conveying a fact of low economy class society around and bringing up a new solution which employs local people are sufficient to swap the law as win – win solution. Although nowadays there are many NGOs in conducting envinronmetal issues such as WWF, TNC, etc, the max effort stops in suggesting a policy based on the scientific data. In the early 2020, the Indonesia Ministry of Environmental has just cut the cooperation agreement with WWF in managing the environmental crisis. The ministry pers conference concluded that the WWF has gone too far in enlarging the research area, overclaiming unreal field data, showing no mutual respect to local government, and showing a environmental campaign which is not appropriate with the data. The WWF representatives only said that an ecosystem is inevitable to be engaged others such as indinigenous perspective and local farmers. Also since the cooperation began in 1962, the WWF has always provided transparency report in data and facts.

How climate change adaptation produces inequality

According to Asia's fact sheet from IPCC (2022) , cyclones, floods, and typhoons have displaced 9.6 million in South, Southeast, and East Asia in 2019, or about 30% of total global displacement. This phenomenon will worsen as IPCC found that climate change in the form of rising temperature increases the floods in monsoon regions like Southeast Asia. Together with the heat stress, the fact shows that surges will highly likely harm food availability, resulting in undernourishment. In 2020, the floods combined with sea-level rise had increased the risk of 30,522 lives in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Jakarta (Indonesia), and Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam). Furthermore, an additional 10,830 people will also be at high risk in 2035 (IPCC, 2022) . In Indonesia, the destructive impacts of climate change on the coastal sector, sea-level rise, will be responsible for 70.82% of the potential economic loss in 2024 for approximately 5.45 billion USD (National Development Planning Agency, 2019) . The most ...

Australia Safeguard Mechanism’s Impacts on Economy

Executive Summary      Australia sets a target to reduce emissions from 621 MtCO 2 -e in 2005 to 354 MtCO 2 -e in 2030 (DCCEEW, 2022a) . However, under the current effort, it is probable that Australia will emit 390 MtCO 2 -e in 2030 (DCCEEW, 2022b) . As deeper cut is fundamentally required, the Albanese government has just reformed the safeguard mechanism to further pressure the carbon emitters business to adhere closely to the Australia’s goal by strictly limit their caps. To achieve the national goal, it is expected that the new emission cap will be progressively tighten at least 4.9% per year (DPMC, 2023) .      The mechanism is criticized as a ‘toothless tiger’ since emissions from fossil fuels-related industries ironically grow up (ACF, 2022) . Since 2005, the sectoral emission trends in stationary energy, transport, and fugitives have increased 27.4%, 13.2%, and 14.1%, respectively due to continued growth of production and export...

Timor, A Global South within Global South

Beta percaya refleksi tu bagian dari co-production of knowledge . So, this is my reflection of my latest six-month research in Timor. What is a global south? Firstly, let’s talk about what planning is .
