Should the rich pay for covid-19?

On the December 31th 2019, a doctor in Wuhan had discovered a new kind of virus which has a common relation with SARS and MERS after handling some patients who repined their hard breathing. These patients obviously had exactly the same previous course which was animal market. According to some microbiology experts, this parasite manifested from unripe bat flesh eating. This local prevalent food led to the appearing of some red spots in lungs which later known as covid-19.

In the early investigation, the doctors claimed this disease as a severe pneumonia. Within a few days, the patients’s lab result showed some red spots which led to dry-hard cough and fever instead of getting better. And in 2-week later, the patients with same symptoms began to increase rapidly especially in the circle of health service providers. Unluckily, this case seems to be neglected by the local authority. Laterly, the local government convinced this unseen disaster after the virus got out of hand. The rage of the people had encouraged it to decise a policy which was needed to mitigate such a frivolity.

Today is the fourth birthmonth of the covid-19. The parasit has spreaded out in every country in less than 16-week. The number of patients vary considerably depending on each country that handles them but generally toward an upward trend. For instance, USA has the most corona cases, meaning a gap of around 2 thousands from Italy and China after a lockdown policy held in Wuhan and Milan. Whereas Indonesia has managed to beat Singapore in the first place of most corona cases in South East Asia after its far-fetched policy to reduce the cost of airplane ticket in order to increase tourism investment. What a move from Indonesia!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has certainly big responsibility to address this crisis. Despite the fact that a lot of steps have been taken by WHO, it still needs to do more in persuading each nation to follow its advices. The WHO has suggested Indonesia to apply lockdown strategy to prevent the spreading of covid-19. But Indonesia has tendency to keep opening airport due to economical reason, regardless of its effect on public health. Surely the local government put no trust in lockdown strategy because there is no evidence in applying such as policy will ameliorate the crisis. Surprisingly, lockdown strategy in Vietnam convices its Asean neighboard by experiencing zero-case of covid-19 for a week.

The government rather listen to its economic expert than believe the local pandemic experts who has provided some worse scenarios of covid-19 in Jakarta in order to suggest the government to lockdown the capital city. Regarding to this recently notion, the president leadership has been largely questioned in tackling this unseen disaster whether he care to public health or public economy. Some communities even believe that the nation has no sufficient fund to feed its people during war time. As to shift this issue and ease the public strain, the Ministry of Human Right proposes a new regulation to release prisoners due to reduce the spreading of covid-19 in jails.

Despite the fact that ‘Shaun the Sheep’ burns the trust of the vast number of people, this inherent unethical act is not all what the public may think. This idea is effectively able to keep a person to stay at home due to the rising of criminal cases without a city lockdown which will put a serious repercussions for families on low incomes. Therefore, the government indirectly has no hand to feed its people because it doesn’t diminish the human right to look after food. On the other hand, the low class have to go to enormous length just to fulfill their needs in a tight time constraint. Staying home means no food, as well as being out of home due to high criminal crimes.

Regarding to the death of Yuni because of starving in a slum, the governor of Tangerang unethically claimed it as a fate. This exorbitant inanity surely vindicates the statement from the president’s press secretary for covid-19, “the poor should stay at home in order to not spread the virus”. Certainly this empty-heanded statement led to a massive critic to the public representative. Furthermore, the Minister of Health (Terawan) unprofessionally said that the body will recure itself. Whereas the vice – president claimed that praying 5 times a day can ease the virus. Seen in this light, these unfounded acts depict the incapable of the government in tackling the covid-19.

It is unfairly unjustified to put far more pressure to the poor for the spreading of covid-19. This is due to their low economy fund in which it can’t afford an international travel. Exactly they prefer to expense it to daily household needs such as food and electricity. On the other hand, the rich may able to have some international duties which make them susceptible to every disease. Therefore, seeing from the economical perspective, it is more likely that the top class have brought the virus inside the nation.

Despite the aforementioned evidences, Indonesia needs to put public health conciously to a precedence. Conceding the advent of covid-19 to the expert may bring a recuperation. Moreover, the nation alongside the rich have to take the wheel in order to feed the less fortunate communities.

How climate change adaptation produces inequality

According to Asia's fact sheet from IPCC (2022) , cyclones, floods, and typhoons have displaced 9.6 million in South, Southeast, and East Asia in 2019, or about 30% of total global displacement. This phenomenon will worsen as IPCC found that climate change in the form of rising temperature increases the floods in monsoon regions like Southeast Asia. Together with the heat stress, the fact shows that surges will highly likely harm food availability, resulting in undernourishment. In 2020, the floods combined with sea-level rise had increased the risk of 30,522 lives in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Jakarta (Indonesia), and Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam). Furthermore, an additional 10,830 people will also be at high risk in 2035 (IPCC, 2022) . In Indonesia, the destructive impacts of climate change on the coastal sector, sea-level rise, will be responsible for 70.82% of the potential economic loss in 2024 for approximately 5.45 billion USD (National Development Planning Agency, 2019) . The most ...

Australia Safeguard Mechanism’s Impacts on Economy

Executive Summary      Australia sets a target to reduce emissions from 621 MtCO 2 -e in 2005 to 354 MtCO 2 -e in 2030 (DCCEEW, 2022a) . However, under the current effort, it is probable that Australia will emit 390 MtCO 2 -e in 2030 (DCCEEW, 2022b) . As deeper cut is fundamentally required, the Albanese government has just reformed the safeguard mechanism to further pressure the carbon emitters business to adhere closely to the Australia’s goal by strictly limit their caps. To achieve the national goal, it is expected that the new emission cap will be progressively tighten at least 4.9% per year (DPMC, 2023) .      The mechanism is criticized as a ‘toothless tiger’ since emissions from fossil fuels-related industries ironically grow up (ACF, 2022) . Since 2005, the sectoral emission trends in stationary energy, transport, and fugitives have increased 27.4%, 13.2%, and 14.1%, respectively due to continued growth of production and export...

Timor, A Global South within Global South

Beta percaya refleksi tu bagian dari co-production of knowledge . So, this is my reflection of my latest six-month research in Timor. What is a global south? Firstly, let’s talk about what planning is .
